Taunton’s largest crowd ever were treated toa game of rugby which ebbed and flowed but which Taunton always held the ascendency.
After ten minutes Plymouth gave away a penalty which was kicked to the corner from the resultant lineout Taunton forwards drove at the Plymouth line and after several drives by the forwards the ball was spun out wide to the Taunton wing who scored for Walsh to convert. The deficit was reduced by Plymouth on 20 minutes with a penalty, but Taunton replied with a try on 26 minutes which Walsh again converted for Taunton to have an 11-point lead. Plymouth reduced that lead with another penalty before Taunton again scored a well taken try under the posts which again was converted by Walsh. It looked like Taunton would end the half with a 15-point lead but on the stroke of halftime Plymouth scored but missed the conversion to leave the score in favour of Taunton by 10 points.
The second half saw Plymouth come out with some urgency and after only 3 minutes of play they had scored a converted try to reduce the deficit to just 3 points. However, thy were soon on the score sheet again with Isaac Dalton who many coaches consider the best prop in the league scoring a try which Walsh again converted to give Taunton that 10-point lead once again. This did not last long as within 2 minutes Plymouth again scored a converted try reducing the Taunton lead to just 3 points. A series of penalties given away by Plymouth resulted in Taunton again making several drives at the Plymouth line until Walsh went over for the final try of the afternoon giving Taunton that 10-point lead which they held on to until the final whistle. There were several good performances put in by players on both sides, but the man of the match was Taunton No 4 Daniel Swain who received his bottle of 18th Gin by the Taunton President.
