Taunton U14 ‘Rebels’ fought a close game against worthy opponents Keynsham U14’s in the recent Somerset Cup Junior Finals held at Cheddar Valley RFC last Sunday (30/04). The Rebels squad and many supporters had an early start leaving Veritas Park at 08.00 and travelled by coach up to the Cheddar ground for an early 10.00KO.
Following the previous days glorious weather, it was unfortunate that the Finals day dawned overcast and drizzly! But spirits were not dampened and the team made the most of their preparations and entered the game in good form.
For the first half of the game the Rebels were parked in the Keynsham 22 and repeated efforts on crossing the line were ‘held up’ by an incredible Keynsham defence. With a rising penalty count from Keynsham the Rebels settled for 3 points to get on their way & the game entered halftime at Taunton 3 – Keynsham 0.
The second half of the game saw a push from Keynsham with two well worked tries, one of which was converted. Taunton also scoring a great forwards try & conversion to keep the game within their reach. The score stood at Taunton 10 – Keynsham 12 with minutes left to play.
With the final scrum of the game, the referee awarded a penalty to Taunton. With the decision made to go for the posts, the Taunton Rebels kicker stepped forward and calmly slotted the penalty between the posts. Full time score … Taunton 13 – Keynsham 12.
31 Rebels players attended the final, some played on the day, some didn’t. But they all shared the victory on the day having all contributed throughout the season to the success of this close knit team and a well-earned win.
